Meet Assemblyman Burke, Shaker and Mover at the NY State Assembly π
Bringing Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy to New York π
In the last few years, legislators have been hard at work to give better access to Psychedelic Medicines, in one form or another, to their constituents. This trend has been accelerating as, across the aisle, elected officials better understand the value these medicines can bring. Assemblyman Pat Burke from the New York State Assembly is one of these shakers and movers looking to improve the life and health of the citizens. He shared with me more insights into the bill he is supporting, as well as the motivations guiding his support to Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy in the somewhat conservative state of New York.

A Medicine, Not a Drug π
The goal of the bill is to give access to people in the State of New York to therapeutic pychedelic assisted therapy. Assemblyman Burke sees this bill as the best way to create access to a medical solution for those currently suffering from PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Importantly, the bill frames psychedelics as a medicine, not as a drug.
The bill also includes a fund to support people in financial need, in addition to veterans and first responders.
What this Bill could Change in The US and The World π
On top of bringing care to NY State citizens, a large economic development impact could come from this bill, creating new wealth in the state.
As the 12th largest economy in the world, legislative changes in the State of NY can have a domino effect on the rest of The US and The World.
Leading from the Front - Taking a Stance for the Greater Good π¦Έ
Having grown up in a impoverished neighborhood, Assemblyman Burke witnessed first-hand challenges such as drug and alcohol addiction. He now believes that psychedelics can help many, hence his support for the bill, despite the current political risks associated with supporting these still stigmatized medicines.
βIf I can get this done, I can retire from public service as an happy man
because I know it will save lives.β
A Pragmatic Approach - Start Small, Demonstrate Success, Go Bigger π§
Assemblyman Burke is cognizant of the overall agenda of the psychedelic community - legalization of psychedelics for therapeutic (and recreational) purposes.
However, he believes that to achieve that goal a measured and pragmatic approach taking into consideration the general opinion is needed. In fact, most are still uneducated when it comes to the healing benefits of psychedelics. In that context, alleviating stigmas decades in the making through a thoughtful, well-balanced bill could be the first step towards the decriminalization and legalization of psychedelics.
Wide Support
After initially meeting surprised and somewhat demeaning colleagues, Assemblyman Burke was able to rally a significant number of his peers - 40 - in support of his bill, including from outside his own party.
Saving Lives and Treating Societal Mental Health Illness β€οΈ
This bill will be contributing to the well-being of people in need who today canβt access these medicines; At a micro level, whether with veterans and first responders experiencing PTSD, or at a macro level, with citizens experiencing lack of connectivity, agitation and anger.
Access to PAT is a dramatic way to help people, it is the urgent thing that can get done now and that is feasible via a therapeutic model.
βThis bill is the most effective way to move the needle on this issue right now and it is going to help manyβ
